There is something holy about light. Something divine about it that is unveiled, warms what is cold and lost, and becomes a guide. Light has been a part of who God is from the very beginning, when in the depths of darkness, He simply spoke, 'Let there be light.' A God of light, in the darkness, coming to a broken world that needed Him.And because we are created in the image of this Creator, He designed us to live with that same light shining inside us as well. The problem is that we so easily forget that. Somewhere along the way, we let the light within us become dimmed and dull. We begin to think what God placed in us is not good enough, that our flame isn’t big enough, our story is too messy, or our faith is too small or weak to make a difference in this world. Circumstances, disappointment, people, and busyness all build baskets over our light, little by little, until our faith no longer glows with a supernatural brightness but instead is hidden beneath fear, shame, comparison, or control.I have seen it in others. And more than once, I have lived it.For far too long, I knew what it was to believe in God and follow Him in some capacity, but not really live in the freedom and confidence of His light. I wanted to shine. I wanted to be a man who loved God and poured out the overflow of His light into the darkness around me. But the reality was I spent much of my life and faith weighed down by other things; doubt, expectations, and even the pressure of performance. It wasn’t until I began to understand that being a light in the world was not about perfection; that it had nothing to do with doing everything right, and everything to do with surrender, that everything began to change. If God spoke the first light into being, the same God who said, 'Let there be light,' is speaking that same command over our hearts today.A Light Made to Shine is a book I wrote for all of you who know you were made for more but feel like something you can’t quite name is sitting on your light. For the woman who loves God but wonders how to live unashamedly for Him in a world that praises and celebrates everything He says is wrong. For the tired young man who has carried a basket full of past mistakes, the over-anxious parent who prays daily for the courage to be enough, and the servant-hearted soul who is so poured out they aren’t sure if the light inside them is still shining at all. Each chapter of this book unpacks a 'basket' that hides our light from the world - baskets of fear, comparison, distraction, control, and other relational thieves that so subtly steal our joy and purpose. Together, we will explore what these baskets are made of, how they are formed, and most importantly, how God gently teaches us to lift them off our light. Through Scripture, personal reflection, real-life stories, and prayer, my hope is not only to help you identify what is dimming your light but also to experience with me the freedom that comes when you finally let Christ’s light shine through you once again. This book is not meant to be one of condemnation, far from it, but rather a journey of rediscovery. It is an invitation to come out from under the darkness of striving and into the peaceful, gentle light of God’s love. Because once we finally lift the basket, once we surrender what is weighing us down, our very lives begin to shine for the world to see. Our homes grow warm and bright. Our faith grows strong and bold. And the world around us slowly becomes more beautiful as we let our light spill out over everything and everyone we meet.Jesus never called us to shine so that we might draw attention to ourselves; He called us to reflect Him. The light He has placed inside of us is not about drawing attention to us but about pointing others toward the goodness and grace of the One who lives inside us.
