''A Legend of Montrose'' is a historical novel written by Sir Walter Scott. The book is set in Scotland during the 17th century and follows the story of a young nobleman named Allan M’Aulay. The novel is set during the time of the Scottish Civil War, and M’Aulay finds himself caught between two warring factions. On one side is the Covenanters, who are fighting for religious freedom and against the tyranny of King Charles I. On the other side are the Royalists, who are loyal to the king and fighting to preserve the monarchy. M’Aulay becomes involved with both sides and must navigate his way through the political and religious turmoil of the time. Along the way, he meets a cast of colorful characters, including the titular Montrose, a charismatic and enigmatic figure who becomes a legend in his own time. The book explores themes of loyalty, honor, and the complexities of political and religious conflict. It is a gripping tale of adventure, romance, and intrigue set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in Scottish history.Notwithstanding the proverbial epicurism of the English, --proverbial, that is to say, in Scotland at the period,--the English visitors made no figure whatever at the entertainment, compared with the portentous voracity of Captain Dalgetty, although that gallant soldier had already displayed much steadiness and pertinacity in his attack upon the lighter refreshment set before them at their entrance, by way of forlorn hope. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
