Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar o significado que se produz em usuários de saúde mental referente à condição de estar institucionalizado em um hospital, utilizando como base de referência a Política Brasileira de Saúde Mental. Os resultados encontrados apontam que a percepção do transtorno mental aparece com características próprias em cada participante, mas compartilha de uma mesma ideia, que o transtorno mental é considerado uma condição complexa, ruim e sofrida para quem vivencia. Já a longa permanência no hospital possui vários significados: prisão, ociosidade, cura do vício e pertencimento a instituição, pois vêem o hospital como um recurso que estão contando na ausência da família, mas deixam claro que não querem viver naquele ambiente por muito tempo. Constatamos que grande parte das pessoas institucionalizadas possui transtorno mental, mas são queixas e sintomas que não justificam a internação prolongada, mesmo porque estão todos de alta e trata-se exclusivamente de uma questão política e social.
