Desde a sua origem, o Tribunal da Inquisição do Santo Ofício, na cidade de Cartagena das Índias, constituiu-se como um palco não só para julgar e condenar pessoas que haviam atentado contra a fé católica, mas também como um espaço onde as pessoas que compareciam perante as autoridades inquisitoriais relatavam o que acontecia ao tribunal, na região caribenha da audiência de Santa Fé. O palco assemelhava-se a uma representação teatral, onde os protagonistas eram autores e artistas do que ali acontecia. Assemelhava-se especificamente às tragédias gregas, que, segundo Aristóteles, tinham como objetivo representar para uma plateia o que se passava na cidade, e foi-se moldando ao longo do tempo, desde o seu início, no século XVII, até à sua extinção, no século XIX. Era o drama do ser humano que habitava esta região da cidade de Cartagena das Índias e da sua província. O caso ou casos a descrever neste texto estão relacionados com uma mulher desse período colonial americano: os processos inquisitoriais levados a cabo pelo Tribunal do Santo Ofício da cidade de Cartagena das Índias contra algumas mulheres feiticeiras.
