A History of Spanish Literature

'A History of Spanish Literature' is a comprehensive and authoritative survey of the literary evolution of Spain, written by the distinguished scholar James Fitzmaurice-Kelly. This work traces the development of Spanish letters from its earliest foundations through the Middle Ages, the glorious Siglo de Oro, and into the early 20th century. Readers will find in-depth analysis of major literary movements and the influential figures who shaped them, including the epic tales of 'The Cid,' the revolutionary prose of Miguel de Cervantes, and the prolific dramatic output of Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. The book meticulously examines the shifts in poetic styles, the rise of the picaresque novel, and the enduring legacy of Spanish mysticism and philosophy. Fitzmaurice-Kelly provides critical insights into how historical events and cultural shifts influenced the creative output of the Iberian Peninsula. As a foundational text in Hispanic studies, 'A History of Spanish Literature' serves as an essential resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the rich tapestry of one of Europe’s most influential literary traditions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
