Este trabalho de investigação debruça-se sobre o envolvimento da França na revolta jacobita de 1745-6, com o objetivo principal de determinar por que razão os franceses apoiaram a revolta e, em última análise, por que razão o apoio foi tão limitado? O trabalho divide-se em três capítulos: o primeiro analisa a probabilidade de uma invasão francesa da Grã-Bretanha para apoiar os jacobitas entre 1744 e 1746; o segundo capítulo discute a natureza do apoio francês à rebelião na Escócia e o terceiro capítulo analisa a influência que a possibilidade de apoio francês teve na campanha e no resultado da rebelião de 1745.
