O orógeno Sevier do Cretáceo ao Paleógeno do oeste da América do Norte é considerado um antigo planalto de alta altitude, amplamente análogo ao Altiplano andino moderno. O orógeno Sevier passou por extensão e colapso topográfico e hoje é ocupado pela Província Basin and Range, uma região de estreitas cadeias montanhosas separadas por amplos vales delimitados por falhas. Os modelos geológicos predominantes sugerem que o interior de Sevier era um planalto de baixo relevo e tectonicamente inerte durante o Cretáceo Superior e o Paleógeno. O novo mapeamento geológico da secção tipo da Formação Sheep Pass, em Nevada, indica que a deposição ocorreu em resposta ao movimento normal da falha, com a deposição da Formação Sheep Pass basal enquadrada como Cretáceo Superior, com base em novos dados de controlo de idade absoluta. Esses dados sugerem que uma Bacia e Cordilheira ancestral ocupava partes do interior de Sevier dezenas de milhões de anos antes do início da Bacia e Cordilheira moderna. Este estudo, portanto, reforça as comparações do interior de Sevier com o Altiplano Andino, uma vez que processos semelhantes de falhas normais no topo do planalto foram documentados nos Andes modernos.
