O nosso problema essencial era: em que sentido é que a filosofia wittgensteiniana é definida como uma atividade tanto no Tractatus como nos escritos pós-Tractatus? No Tractatus, a filosofia é definida como a análise lógica da linguagem. A essência desta atividade é a elucidação da forma lógica comum da linguagem, do pensamento e do mundo. Esta atividade opõe-se a qualquer forma de teorização científica ou filosófica, porque nada contribui e nada representa. É uma atividade de monstração de algo formal e tautológico, que é a forma lógica. Além disso, nos escritos pós-Tractatus, a filosofia é vista como um movimento de descrição sinóptico-fenomenológica da nossa linguagem comum. Procura expor este espaço ilimitado de 'formas de vida' e os nossos 'jogos de linguagem'. De acordo com estas duas interpretações diferentes da atividade, a conceção filosófica de Wittgenstein vai além da tendência generalizadora do conhecimento que aprisiona o pensamento humano em blocos de madeira _ como Wittgenstein disse.
