Enquanto seus contemporâneos buscavam na 'Vontade Divina' a explicação para a conexão entre causa e efeito, Davi Hume redireciona o seu olhar para a natureza humana.Ele faz a análise das Impressões (das nossas percepções sensíveis) e percebe que as Impressões formam a base - e o limite - de todo o conhecimento possível.Acerca do enigma da Experiência ele concluiu que a repetição de eventos não ocorre devido a uma conexão mas sim devido a uma conjugação (ele percebeu que os eventos não estão conectados, mas sim conjugados). Ao invés de conexão há na verdade uma conjugação.Por fim, ele faz a sua Refutação da Volição e utiliza o argumento de que não temos nenhuma impressão de uma divindade agindo sobre a matéria, tornando a hipótese teológica uma extrapolação sem base empírica.
