A bentonite local nigeriana tem sido utilizada desde 2003, mas não obteve ampla aceitação na indústria petrolífera devido aos seus efeitos na maioria das propriedades do cimento. No entanto, esses efeitos não foram devidamente estudados e modelados. Este estudo envolveu a avaliação experimental e económica de algumas bentonites locais nigerianas nas propriedades da pasta de cimento em água doce e salgada. Essas propriedades foram comparadas com as da bentonite estrangeira mais tradicional. A bentonite nigeriana foi beneficiada devido ao seu estado natural. Ambas as bentonites provaram ser eficazes em pastas de cimento de água doce e podem ser usadas de forma intercambiável, exceto em casos em que é necessária uma reologia elevada. Para o projeto de pastas de água salgada, a bentonite local provou responder melhor na reologia e na avaliação do teste de fluido livre. Portanto, com o beneficiamento adequado e mais pesquisas, a bentonite local nigeriana poderia ser mais eficiente e econômica como extensor em pastas de cimento.
