Qual é a conceção de Merleau-Ponty sobre o corpo? O objetivo é examinar o corpo como elemento central no estudo da perceção, e depois estabelecer um diálogo entre o corpo e o mundo sensorial. Para Merleau-Ponty, o corpo é simultaneamente 'sujeito' e 'objeto'. A sua obra, Fenomenologia da Perceção, marcou o início de uma redescoberta do corpo. Nesta publicação emblemática, Merleau-Ponty pôs em evidência uma espécie de dialética entre o corpo e o seu ambiente. Este ambiente não é outro senão o 'mundo percepcionado'. Merleau-Ponty empreendeu assim um trabalho de reabilitação do corpo. Além disso, esta reabilitação do corpo lança luz sobre as questões éticas e bioéticas que a nossa sociedade enfrenta atualmente. Como o corpo humano é o suporte da pessoa, herda as propriedades morais da pessoa. Tem um valor, mas não tem preço. Atribuir um preço ao corpo, às suas partes e aos seus produtos é já uma afronta à dignidade humana.
