Embora as preocupações se tenham centrado na sustentabilidade da dívida pública, a crise também resultou num colapso geral da economia grega. O nível da dívida da Grécia aumentou de 103 % do PIB para mais de 170 % do PIB, a sua economia contraiu-se em 25 %, o desemprego triplicou para 25 % e o sistema bancário grego tornou-se cada vez mais instável. Embora outros governos da zona do euro, o Fundo Monetário Internacional (FMI) e o Banco Central Europeu (BCE) tenham adotado uma série de medidas políticas para conter a crise, a Grécia continua a enfrentar sérios desafios económicos.
