Este estudo identificou e analisou a presença da ciência em textos e imagens presentes nas edições veiculadas pelo jornal O Progresso, sediado atualmente na cidade de Dourados, no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, para reconhecer o cenário da ciência na imprensa escrita (sul) mato-grossense, apontando a abordagem dada pelo jornal às notícias sobre ciência divulgadas. Foi adotado um delineamento longitudinal, já que foram pesquisadas as edições desde a fundação do jornal O Progresso, na década de 1920, até as edições de junho de 2019. De caráter exploratório quanto à metodologia, os aportes teóricos recorridos para embasar esses procedimentos partem dos referenciais da análise de conteúdo, com a utilização, como instrumentos de coleta de dados, de uma adaptação do protocolo proposto pela Rede Ibero-Americana de Monitoramento e Capacitação em Jornalismo Científico e o software IRAMUTEQ (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires) para o processamento dos dados. A pesquisa revelou que a divulgação de temas sobre ciência ocorreu de forma regular e significativa no jornal a partir de sua fundação em Dourados, no ano de 1951. Foram noticiadas, sobretudo, pesquisas e eventos que tratavam da ciência regional, com um predomínio de notícias da área das ciências agrárias e extensão rural, com temas de interesse do setor do agronegócio local. 10
