This novel is the second book in the fantasy series A CHILD OF CARISTOKE. The series centers on a small village in the kingdom of Camaria--in which the members of several generations of one family are drawn into adventures involving wizards, witches, dragons, and more. Each book weaves together past and present adventures, as well as the backstories of the wizards and witches. Each adventure is undertaken to defeat some evil which threatens the world, each draws upon the inner strengths of the village characters--no matter how old or young. Characters are continued from book to book, while new characters important to the action are introduced as well. In addition, some story arcs run through each book, with some concluding in Book 4. When Sir Persiflas the knight and his faithful squire come riding into the village of Caristoke, Joss, Nickolas and their cousin Mykael once again are drawn into an adventure with the wizard Pendravyn. This time, the boys’ infant cousin Daniel is abducted for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, which also requires a certain crystal goblet, the fabled swords of Avat’ar, and the ship of truth from an ancient seafaring king. The quest to find these treasures is a race against time, as the shaman Khasil holds the horsemen of the Cherdir people enthralled in his own pursuit to fulfill the prophecy. This time, too, while the boys’ Aunt Cailie has some part to play, a strange sickness threatens her life. Has she brought this disaster upon herself and her family through her own long-ago adventures in the world of magic? Through a tenuous tie to a young Cherdir horseman, she trails after the Cherdir as they follow Khasil. With her own strength waning, how can she help her nephews rescue Daniel and prevent the prophecy from coming true?
