Considerada esta instituição como uma configuração social que distribuía, legitimava e reproduzia formas de domínio político - poderes e instituições -, procedemos, nesta obra, à reconstituição das redes de parentesco, de serviço, de interdependência, que se alicerçaram entre a corte das mulheres dos reis portugueses, as instituições centrais de administração - o Conselho das Rainhas - e os representantes locais deste património senhorial. Desta interpenetração de poderes convergentes, mas, não raro concorrentes, a dinastia de Bragança saberá capitalizar, a seu favor, recursos humanos, ganhos políticos e prestígio social. Contando, neste processo, com o apoio da Casa das Rainhas, ela própria pródiga na protecção e defesa de bens, de gentes e de territórios.
