This book traces Zhang Zuolin’s journey from a gambler to a bandit who accepted government amnesty, and then his step-by-step rise to become the 'King of Fengtian,' the 'King Beyond the Shanhai Pass,' the 'King of Manchuria and Mongolia,' and ultimately the Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy of the Beijing government. It vividly portrays the legendary life of a formidable figure during the tumultuous Beiyang era. At the same time, the author strives to examine this historical figure from a more comprehensive and objective perspective. On one hand, it truthfully depicts how Zhang Zuolin, in his pursuit of 'conquering the nation,' resorted to militarism, repeatedly led his forces into the Central Plains to vie for dominance, ultimately harming the country, the people, and himself. On the other hand, it does not overlook his efforts to skillfully navigate pressure and tactfully engage with the Japanese, striving in every possible way to safeguard China’s national sovereignty. In its creation, this book references and uncovers many highly valuable historical materials, particularly through comparative studies of relevant Chinese and Japanese sources. It offers a comprehensive and multidimensional interpretation of Zhang Zuolin’s personality traits, life experiences, and the bizarre historical realities of the Beiyang period. Furthermore, based on solid historical evidence, the author provides detailed portrayals of Zhang Zuolin’s subordinates, such as Yang Yuting and Guo Songling, as well as his son, Zhang Xueliang. The book also addresses the historical reality of China facing pressure, encroachment, and exploitation from Soviet Russia, Japan, and other foreign powers at the time.《张作霖传》是北洋军阀代表人物张作霖的传记作品。
