RUNES FOREWORD The idea of presenting the ethical teachings of Judaism arid Christianity, viewed apart from the usual mytholog ical and historical material, is an interesting one. While many Christians may think that such a treatment may deprive them of the character of a special revelation it is to be remembered that, to nonChristians, such noble teachings as the Sermon on the Mount stand in their lonely splendor, without need of props. Sometimes these jewels shine better without elaborate settings. Like looking at great paintings without gilt frames, one seems to be better able to size up and recognize their greatness. Lin Yutang
