A cultura desempenha um papel importante nas sociedades humanas. Cada cultura tem os seus próprios costumes que podem ter uma influência significativa na saúde e na saúde oral. Está agora bastante estabelecido que os factores culturais estão profundamente envolvidos em todo o modo de vida, como em questões de nutrição, imunização, higiene pessoal, planeamento familiar, educação dos filhos, procura de cuidados médicos precoces, eliminação de resíduos sólidos e excrementos humanos, etc. Todas as práticas culturais não são prejudiciais. A tendência para adotar hábitos como o tabagismo, o alcoolismo e a toxicodependência em nome da civilização entre as gerações mais jovens tem de ser combatida o mais cedo possível, caso contrário, poderá ter um enorme impacto negativo no estado de saúde da geração vindoura. Temos de identificar os factores culturais que são prejudiciais e desencorajar essas práticas através de uma educação sanitária intensiva. Os trabalhadores do sector primário da saúde e os professores das escolas podem desempenhar um papel vital na sensibilização da população em geral e dos estudantes para os efeitos adversos das práticas culturais deletérias.
