Joan of Miami - Reviewed by Demetria Head for Reader Views (2/2025)A. Parrish’s 'Joan of Miami' brings readers into the exploration of morality, ambition, and resilience. The setting is the vibrant backdrop of Miami in the early 2000s. Jean Molk is a young research assistant turned reluctant whistleblower. A tale of corporate corruption, community solidarity, and the eternal struggle between self-interest and the greater good begins to unfold. This novel is brought together by the richly drawn characters and sharp social commentary, making Joan of Miami an incisive and thought-provoking narrative. As the story opens, Jean is working as a part-time librarian and researcher at a prestigious public relations firm. But her quiet life is turned upside down when she inadvertently uncovers unethical dealings involving her employer and a powerful developer intent on displacing a historic Miami community. Jean soon finds herself contending with the ethical dilemmas of speaking out against her employer, honoring her family’s legacy and her grandmother’s unwavering principles. Parrish does a great job juxtaposing Jean’s struggles with larger societal issues, creating a narrative that is as intimate as it is universally relevant.Parrish creates life in Miami itself that makes it as much a character as any of the novel’s protagonists. The city is brought to life with its vibrant neighborhoods, from its glitzy downtown to its historic enclaves. The narrative also reflects Miami’s real-world challenges of the time, capturing the tension between rapid development and the preservation of cultural heritage. This setting helps to ground the story’s moral conflicts in tangible stakes by providing a dynamic backdrop to explore community and identity.Parrish has beautifully crafted the characters, with Jean emerging as a relatable and deeply human protagonist. Her moral integrity is tempered by moments of doubt and fear which makes her journey all the more compel
