In 2021, the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) listed Japan at number 9 among 172 independent states and territoriesin the annually published Global Peace Index (GPI). Considering the low rate of homicide, armed robbery, or assault, this ranking might be reasonable. But what if we examine suicide rates? Taking into account there were 21,000 reported deaths it is clear that, in terms of mental health, Japan should not be in the top 10. What does this mean for Blacks who live in Japan? Each year, with more and more immigrants from the African diaspora moving to the island-nation, how will they avoid becoming victims of not only suicide but also the other psychological maladies which plague the society such as alienation and bullying (ijime), people working themselves to death (karoshi), or even the tendency to become an anti-social hermit (hikikomori)? Moreover, what about the accusations of Japanese harboring prejudicial views concerning foreigners? This book answers these questions and much more. In fact, it is the blueprint-the actual script-for people in Japan who wish to live a balanced, healthy life.

Three particular themes are basic to this study. First, that the human race and its environment are involved in a slowly progressive process of revelation and understanding of its inherent features; and that we are all participating in this ongoing evolutionary cycle. Second, and closely related to the first tenet, man is not separable from his environment. We all share in this...

  • Gaikokujin - the Story II

This is a spiritual rags to riches adventure. I have been blessed to live a ‘storybook life’ but not in any glamorous way. Writing this book has allowed me to examine my role as a person of color—which I refer to as ‘melanin-rich’—in a society which has proven itself to be hostile toward non-Caucasian people. Because this is part memoir, part historical treatise, and part survi...
