Գուրգեն Մահարին (իսկական ազգանունը Աճեմյան) ծնվել է 1903 թվականին Վան քաղաքում ,ուսուցչի ընտանիքում։ Նախնական կրթությունն ստացել է տեղի Նորաշեն և Երեմեան դպրոցներում։  Մինչև Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմն ու հայոց Ցեղասպանությունը ունեցել է քիչ թե շատ անհոգ մանկություն։ Սակայն պատերազմը ինչպես ամբողջ հայության այնպես էլ նրա ճակատագիրը փոխեց։ Երբ թուրքերը հարձակվեցին Վանի վրա, նրանք փրկվելով կոտորածից կռվեցին մինչև ռուսական զորքի ժամանելը, սակայն ռուսական զորքը նահանջեց և նրանց հետ նահանջեցին նաև հայերը։ Մոր և եղբոր հետ գաղթել են Արևելյան Հայաստան, սակայն  ճանապարհին կորցրել է նրանց:  Մեծացել է Երևանի ու Դիլիջանի որբանոցներում, հետո գտել  կենդանի մնացած մորը և մյուս հարազատներին։  Որբանոցում ծանոթացել է Եղիշե Չարենցի հետ և սկսվել է ստեղծագործական կյանքը։ Սովորել է ԵՊՀ֊ի պատմա֊գրական ֆակուլտետում։                                              Մահարու տատը մահացել էր գաղթի ճանապարհին։ Հետագայում նա սիրով ու հումորով տատի մասին պատմել է իր Մանկություն վիպակում։ Որբանոցից հետո կյանքի հետագա թափառումների մասին պատմել է Պատանեկություն վիպակում։ Նա ճանաչվեց Մանկություն և Պատանեկություն ստեղծագործություններով։ Սակայն նրա գրական գործունեությունը ընդհատվեց 1936-ին:Անհիմն մեղադրանքով, ստալինյան ռեպրեսիայի արդյունքում, Մահարին  ևս աքսորվել է: 1953-ին նա վերադարձել է Երևան և գրել իր ամենահայտնի ստեղծագործությունները՝ Ծաղկած փշալարեր վիպակ-հուշագրությունը և Այրվող այգեստաններ վեպը:  Գուրգեն Մահարին մահացել է  1969 թվականին Լիտվայում:
