西側世界にとって80年代のアフガニスタンはブラックボックスである。周辺情報はいくらでもあるが内部情報は少ない。状況証拠や公式情報をベースに憶測するしかな。80年代の10年近くアフガニスタンに直接武力介入を行い、それが崩壊の原因のひとつともなったソ連に関しては、アメリカに対抗する超大国であったこと、ソ連を引きついだロシアが依然として軍事的経済的に大国であることから、この武力介入は研対象とされてきた。ソ連が崩壊してロシアとなり当時の内部資料が一部公開されるようになり、アフガニスタン武力介入に関わるソ連内部の動向が少しずつ明らかにされつつある。また、このような地道な研究はその後も続けられ、成果が発表されている。しかし、アフガニスタン内部の事情に関していうと、80年代を通じて政治の中心となっていたアフガニスタン人民民主党(PDPA)(4)が完全崩壊し、その後ほとんど20年間、破壊的な内戦状態がつづき、人的にも資料的にもデータが散逸ないし消滅する厳しい事態が出現した。人民民主党政権が崩壊してからの4年間は前政権を打ち倒したムジャヒディン(5)同士がミサイルを含む最新兵器で内戦を繰り広げ、首都カーブルは文字通り廃墟となった。さらにまた、内戦に明け暮れるムジャヒディンを武力で放逐したタリバン政権(6)はイスラム回帰を旗印にカンボジアのポルポト政権に勝るとも劣らない反西欧文明政策を実施し、政治文書だけでなく文化娯楽作品まで焼き払う徹底ぶりであった。<解説=野口壽一>'Why Did We Collapse?' is a book in 'JAPANESE’ language. It narrates the circumstances that led to the collapse of President Najibullah’s regime and takeover of power by Mujahiddin fighters in Afghanistan in 1992. It is a first-hand account written by Abdul Hamid Muhtat the then vice-president and is a valuable read for those interested in the affairs of Afghanistan and the region. This particular edition is intended for the Japanese readers.
