В работе реконструируется история развития Кавказского отдела Императорского русского географического общества от момента его создания в начале 1850-х гг. до начала 1918 г., когда сведения о нём исчезли из прессы. В первой части рассмотрена общая история Отдела в указанный период. Далее исследована система руководства, изменения в ней и даны биографии отдельных администраторов с указанием их вклада в историю Отдела. Два раздела посвящено разбору истории высших руководящих и рабочих органов Кавказского отдела Императорского русского географического общества - общих собраний и Распорядительного комитета.
