Fyrir Baree, í marga daga eftir að hann fæddist, var heimurinn gríðarlegur drungalegur hellir. Á þessum fyrstu dögum lífs síns var heimili hans í hjarta mikils vindhviða þar sem Gray Wolf, blinda móðir hans, hafði fundið öruggt hreiður fyrir ungbarn sitt og sem Kazan, félagi hennar, kom aðeins af og til, augu hans glitandi eins og skrýtnir kúlur af grænleitum eldi í myrkri. Það voru augu Kazan sem færðu Baree fyrstu sýn sína af einhverju sem var til staðar frá hlið móður sinnar, og þau færðu honum einnig sýn hans. Hann fann, fann lyktina, heyrði - en í svörtu gryfjunni undir fallnu timbri hafði hann aldrei séð fyrr en augun komu. Fyrst hræddu þeir hann; þá veltu þeir honum fyrir sér og ótti hans breyttist í gífurlega forvitni. Hann myndi horfa beint á þá, þegar þeir myndu í einu hverfa. Þetta var þegar Kazan snéri höfðinu. Og þá myndu þeir blikka aftur til hans út úr myrkrinu með svo ógnvekjandi suddenness að Baree myndi ósjálfrátt minnka nær móður sinni, sem alltaf nötraði og hrollur á undarlegan hátt þegar Kazan kom inn. Baree, auðvitað, myndi auðvitað aldrei þekkja sögu þeirra. Hann myndi aldrei vita að Gray Wolf, móðir hans, væri fullblóðugur úlfur og að Kazan, faðir hans, væri hundur. Í honum var náttúran þegar að hefja sitt frábæra verk en hún myndi aldrei fara út fyrir vissar takmarkanir. Það myndi segja honum með tímanum að fallega úlfamóðir hans væri blind en hann myndi aldrei vita af þeim hræðilega bardaga milli Gráa úlfsins og gabbsins þar sem sjón móður hans hafði verið eytt. Náttúran gat sagt honum ekkert um miskunnarlaus hefnd Kazan, frá yndislegu æskuárum þeirra, hollustu þeirra, undarlegum ævintýrum þeirra í kanadísku óbyggðinni miklu - það gæti gert hann aðeins son Kazan. 3
