85年間にわたり、Mストリート／ダンバー高校は、ワシントンD.C.における黒人のみを対象とした、公立で学問的に非常に優れた高校であった。1899年以降、この学校の生徒たちは、市内の黒人学校·白人学校を問わず実施された試験において、常に最上位の成績を収めていた。この85年間で、Mストリート／ダンバー高校の卒業生のおよそ80％が大学へ進学しており、当時、黒人·白人を問わず大多数のアメリカ人が大学に進学していなかったことを考えると、これは極めて特筆すべきことである。 教職員と生徒の間には相互の尊敬があり、授業中の混乱は一切許されなかった。しかし、優れた教育実践が重視される現代において、奴隷制や人種隔離を直接経験した創設者たちによって築かれたこの公立高校は、都市部の不利な環境における教育に関する研究文献や教育政策の中で、ほとんど注目されてこなかった。本研究の目的は、あらゆる所得層の家庭出身の黒人の子どもたちに卓越した教育を施すことに成功した一つの高校の歴史を探り、過去に用いられた学習モデルが、現代の都市公立教育の文脈においても有効であり得るかを検討することである。
