In these true stories the author tells us what he actually experienced as a boy growing up in the Peace country of northern Alberta. In addition to relating the details of what life was like in the 1930’s and 1940’s in Canada’s north, the stories are allegorical in nature, with each one raising for consideration a moral issue. “The Rabbit Hunt”, for example, is about dealing with the sentiment of blood lust. What to do about bullying is the issue in “The Bully”. The themes of courage and perseverance are raised in “Birdie”. Other themes like justice, corporeal punishment, bravery, being a sissy, and trapping wild animals are brought to the fore in other stories. The author’s own view on these issues comes through, while leaving plenty of room for other points of view. The most compelling feature of the stories, however, is their ring of authenticity, brought about by graphic and accurate description of exciting real actions and events.
