Bastiat hace tres contribuciones centrales en Sofismas económicos. En primer lugar, nos recuerda que nos debería preocupar también el consumidor, no sólo el productor. En segundo lugar, desmonta el argumento de que no hay leyes económicas. En tercer lugar, y más generalmente, es uno de los pocos políticos y escritores que piensa con la cabeza, no con el corazón. Bastiat utiliza la lógica para establecer claramente las consecuencias de las acciones políticas en lugar de esconderse detrás de las buenas intenciones.Sofismas económicos expresa un tema común una y otra vez: debemos elaborar políticas que se centren en los consumidores, y no en los productores.
