La novela comienza en el año 63 d.C, en tiempos de César Nerón, cuando el joven Vinicio visita a su tío Petronio, uno de los favoritos del emperador, para que le ayude a conseguir a Ligia, una rehén capturada por el ejército romano que vive con una familia que la considera su hija adoptiva. Sin embargo, Vinicio no sabe que ella es de religión cristiana y que únicamente podrán casarse si él se convierte. Sienkiewicz se sirve de esta historia de amor entre los dos protagonistas para retratar el contraste entre la aristocracia romana presa de excesos y frivolidades y los primeros cristianos martirizados por Nerón, que llegó a acusarlos del incendio de Roma. Muchos críticos han visto en Quo Vadis una metáfora del país en el que vivió su autor, Polonia, que en aquella época estaba sometida por el imperialismo de Rusia y su zar. La novela, ganadora del Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1905, se publicó en 1896 y en poco tiempo se convirtió en todo un clásico, con varias adaptaciones cinematográficas. En un principio la obra apareció por episodios en el periódico Gazeta Polska de Varsovia; su publicación en el periódico Gazeta y en los diarios Czas (Cracovia) y Dziennik Poznaski fue ligeramente posterior. Un poco más tarde, se editó en su totalidad y se presentó en Cracovia en 1896.
