El maestro del relato corto y poeta satírico americano Ambrose Bierce, nacido en Ohio en 1842 y desaparecido en 1914, en sus días de gloria se ganaría el sobrenombre de «Bitter Bierce» (el amargo Bierce) como consecuencia de su enfoque sarcástico de la vida y de su visión grotesca de la condición humana tal y como se advierte en toda su creación literaria. Pese a ser la poesía uno de los géneros literarios donde mejor se aprecia su deslumbrante ingenio, el legado literario de Bierce ha venido siendo especialmente estudiado como periodista, escritor de relato corto y crítico literario, soslayándose reiterada e injustamente su excelencia poética. Sus vivencias como capita´n del eje´rcito de la Unio´n durante la Guerra de Secesio´n (1861-1865) y, ma´s tarde, como columnista en perio´dicos de impacto como el San Francisco Examiner, proporcionaron a Bierce un acercamiento de primera mano a los distintos grupos sociales de los Estados Unidos de fin de sie`cle. De este modo, el autor pudo conocer la decadencia moral y e´tica de una sociedad hipo´crita, materialista y egoi´sta, producto de la pujante industrializacio´n y del consecuente desarrollo econo´mico que el pai´s estaba experimentando. Bierce recurre al proceso lírico como vehículo de expresio´n de sus inquietudes ante tal encrucijada sociocultural. En 1903, Bierce publica Shapes of Clay, el poemario donde empleara´ su característico tono incisivamente sati´rico para denunciar la estructura y el funcionamiento del mundo que le rodea, un mundo corrompido e irracional por el que siente un profundo descontento. Por otro lado, la función poética que Bierce articula en Shapes of Clay también demuestra su maestría en el ámbito no-sati´rico, a trave´s de composiciones que revelan una sensibilidad inusitada en las que el autor vierte su particular filosofía sobre la condición humana: una insaciable y megalómana persecución de los placeres mundanos que habitualmente acaba siendo frustrada por la muerte. En este sentido, el título que da nombre a este poemario es muy significativo, pues explica la concepción que Bierce tiene de los seres humanos: insignificantes figuras de barro que luchan inútilmente por descollar en un mundo que las engulle lenta e implacablemente.
