Verstedelijking is de verschuiving van een landelijke naar een stedelijke samenleving en brengt een toename van het aantal mensen in stedelijke gebieden gedurende een bepaald jaar met zich mee. Ethiopië is een van de minst verstedelijkte landen ter wereld. Het heeft slechts 18% van de bevolking die in stedelijke centra woont (PCC, 2008). Echter, gezien de 2,73% totale jaarlijkse bevolkingsgroei, de hoge mate van migratie naar de steden en de toename van het aantal stedelijke centra, neemt het tempo van de verstedelijking toe met 4,4% (MoFED, 2006). Bovendien zal de stedelijke bevolking van het land naar verwachting gemiddeld met 3,98% groeien en in 2050 zal naar verwachting ongeveer 42,1% van de totale bevolking in stedelijke centra wonen (UN-HABITAT, 2007). Het negatieve effect van de stadsuitbreiding is meer van invloed op de mensen die op het platteland wonen wanneer een toestand ontstaat waarin hun landbouwgrond wordt ingenomen en zij zich vermommen. Omdat de landbouwgrond en de landbouwvaardigheid de enige hulpbron is die de ontheemde boeren hebben. Daarom is grote zorgvuldigheid geboden wanneer mensen ontheemd raken van hun oorspronkelijke land en type van leven.
