Una de las causas de la crítica situación sanitaria en las áreas metropolitanas de América Latina durante la pandemia de COVID-19 fue el déficit en la provisión de servicios urbanos básicos como agua, saneamiento, transporte y energía. En este volumen se analizan, mediante enfoques multidisciplinarios, algunos problemas socioambientales y factores concurrentes que explican esa situación. En distintos artículos se pone el foco en políticas públicas inconclusas o, con mayor frecuencia, ineficientes en distintas localizaciones de la RMBA, Argentina, y el AMCO, Colombia: el crecimiento de asentamientos precarios que evidencia la informalidad en la provisión de vivienda a los excluidos de las políticas públicas; las asimetrías en la gestión gubernamental de las áreas verdes urbanas y el valor ambiental del patrimonio arquitectónico; la toma de decisiones mediante métodos participativos multicriteriales y el análisis del metabolismo urbano.
