En un hotel de Vernet les Bains, en los Pirineos orientales franceses, la noche del 10 de octubre de 1939 fallece por causas poco claras José Gaos Berea, padre de los hermanos Gaos, notario y librepensador, que era, según Max Aub, «el auténtico genio de la familia». Había llegado hasta allí como refugiado político huyendo de la represión franquista. Así arranca una apasionante investigación sobre los Gaos, una familia de la burguesía ilustrada, plenamente identificada con los ideales republicanos, que padeció de forma implacable la fractura que causó la Guerra Civil en Valencia. No es corriente que en un mismo grupo familiar coincidan nueve hermanos (José, Carlos, María, Alejandro, Ángel, Ignacio, Vicente, Fernando y Lola) con tanta predisposición hacia la filosofía, la poesía, la música, el teatro, el cine y el arte, en general, y con tanto protagonismo político como tuvieron los Gaos en los años de la Segunda República y la guerra en Valencia. Con la derrota republicana, la mitad de los hermanos tuvieron que exiliarse a México. Su historia es el testimonio de una familia rota por la victoria franquista que nos obliga a reflexionar sobre los peligros de la desmemoria en el momento actual.
