... Les fourmis sont les insectes les plus abondants dans les dépôts tertiaires. On en trouve dans l’Éocène, le plus ancien de ces dépôts. Elles y sont, il est vrai, assez rares. En revanche, le nombre des fourmis Oligocènes et Miocènes est considérable. Onze mille sept cent onze spécimens recueillis dans l’ambre de la Baltique ont été examinés, ainsi que des centaines d’autres trouvés dans l’ambre sicilien qui appartient au Miocène moyen. Mais voici la constatation la plus déconcertante : au rebours de ce qu’on attendait, on remarque que les fourmis les plus anciennes ne sont pas plus primitives que celles qu’on rencontre dans l’ambre fossile, et que ces dernières, malgré les millions d’années qui les séparent, sont presque aussi spécialisées, aussi civilisées que nos formes pré-sentes... 3
