I denne boken skildrer Fridtjof Nansen en lengre reise som han gjorde i Sibir i 1913 etter invitasjon fra russiske myndigheter. I kjølvannet av første verdenskrig kom han til å engasjere seg sterkt for forholdene i Russland.Jonas Lied, som organiserte reisen fra Norge til Sibir, hadde stiftet Det sibirske kompani for å drive handel og industri i Sibir og grunnla blant annet et sagbruk i Lesosibirsk ved Jenisej som sies å være verdens største.Nansen reiste gjennom Ishavet til munningen av Jenisej, opp denne elven til Krasnojarsk og med jernbanen frem og tilbake til Vladivostok. I dag er Fridtjof Nansen en av Krasnojarsk største helter og fortsatt høyst levende i folks minne.Boken er en del av Nansen-serien Fra Svalbard til Kaukasus, tredje bind.
