Os filisteus são uma das tribos dos 'povos do mar' (anteriormente chamados de Pelasgi), que se estabeleceram nos séculos XIII-XIV a.C. em Canaã. A Palestina recebeu o seu nome em nome deste povo. Há registos dos séculos XIII-XII a.C. de como os faraós egípcios reflectiram a invasão dos 'povos do mar': Ramsés III em duas ferozes batalhas em terra e no mar conquistou uma difícil vitória sobre eles e assim salvou a civilização egípcia.
