Avanços nas tecnologias geotécnicas são fundamentais para progressão da infraestrutura e do desenvolvimento de técnicas de uso de solos como material de construção. Dentre as formas de aumento da confiabilidade das estruturas geotécnicas, têm-se destacado a incorporação de resíduos, que reagem quimicamente com a massa de solo, aumentando a sua estabilidade. Esta solução, vem em contrapartida à acumulação de resíduos nas indústrias, onde os processos por vezes os geram sem a implementação de um retorno ao ambiente, depositando-os em aterros industriais. No processo Kraft, predominante na indústria de papel e celulose, não é diferente, pois na etapa de caustificação, geram-se os resíduos conhecidos como os dregs, grits e a lama de cal. Neste livro então, consta uma avaliação sobre os benefícios de utilização do resíduo lama de cal, com base em considerações acadêmicas que demonstram o potencial do resíduo como estabilizante de solos finos, e como sua utilização em obras geotécnicas pode reduzir impactos na geração das fábricas, em detrimento do aumento da estabilidade dos maciços de terra.
