Azar (1913) resulta un caso atípico dentro de la obra de Joseph Conrad, por contar con una heroína romántica y sentimental redimida finalmente por el amor y por tener un final feliz. La novela, primera obra del autor de origen polaco que obtuvo en su época el reconocimiento del gran público, insiste, no obstante, en uno de sus temas recurrentes, como es el del aislamiento emocional. Por medio de la técnica del relato dentro del relato y a lo largo de una extensa conversación que mantienen esencialmente el capitán Marlow alter ego del autor, protagonista de «El corazón de las tinieblas» y «Juventud» (ambos libros publicados también en Verbum) y el segundo de a bordo del Ferndale, el joven Powell, narrador propiamente dicho de la historia, conocemos los avatares y padecimientos de Flora de Barral, la hija de un financiero especulador y desaprensivo. Delicado personaje femenino que constituye una de las mejores creaciones de Conrad, Flora pasa por una azarosa existencia llena de soledad interior hasta alcanzar, no sin la intervención de la desgracia, el desvanecimiento de las tinieblas que ensombrecen su existencia.
