Arroz y tartana (1894) pertenece a la primera etapa creadora de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Escrita en su día para el folletín del diario republicano El Pueblo, que él mismo fundó, la novela, que narra la caída de una familia perteneciente a la esfera del comercio como resultado de su obsesión por las apariencias, apunta contra una clase social la aún incipiente burguesía española que en muchas ocasiones se revelaba incapaz de hallar su lugar en una sociedad marcada por unas estructuras esclerotizadas. Doña Manuela Pajares, viuda por dos veces, pertenece a una familia dedicada al comercio tradicional, que con mucho esfuerzo ha levantado una tienda de tejidos, Las Tres Rosas, y logrado una posición desahogada en la ciudad de Valencia. Desgraciadamente para ella, la fortuna conseguida por su primer marido fue dilapidada por el segundo, pero obsesionada por mantener las apariencias de un alto nivel de vida para casar a sus dos hijas, ella sigue gastando por encima de sus posibilidades y endeudándose cada vez más.
